The Wankys Radio Bronka (Tratamiento de Shock)‏

Whilst in Barcelona we were invited to do an interview on a local radio station, we were all a bit shy about doing it and my (serious) suggestion of getting drunk and then doing the interview didn't seem to be a goer. So here we are, warts and all, hungover and feeling a bit nervous. Seems we needs a few tips from the Alastair Campbell of Noise Punk (Tony Gunnarson) in media relations. If you fancy it have a listen to the podcast (sink link below).

Where are you Lady Luck?

Usually I think that I’m one of life’s winners, y’know Lady Luck deals me a good hand of cards and I’m generally full of optimism and cynical towards cynics. However recently I have been starting to question this, especially regarding making records and running a label. So I took delivery of the Formby Channel ep, sounds great, the vinyl and labels look superb and the colour co-ordination is spot on. The covers look outstanding, Beryl did an amazing job with the design and she deserves a glass of Sherry. BUT once again over 20% of the pressing got all fucked up in transit, which makes me feel so disheartened.  I need to re-think my options regarding getting covers made. As usual I’m looking for distribution for this and The Wankys live LP, so if you can help get in touch with me at wankys@hotmail.co.uk and no I do not want any penis enlargement pills, diazepam and wont give you my bank account details, thank you very much.

Noise Punk 002 The Wankys- Noise Punk Live Hero Swindle LP out now

Yesterday I collected this beauty and was left with a mixture of elation and disappointment.

Elation due to the way the cover had turned out (GREAT) and disappointment as approximately 1/6th of the albums were in such poor condition because of the way they were packaged that they are unsellable. Something I will chase up with the pressing plant/agent, but that is another story.
So I have spent the day preparing packages for the 200 copies that will be distributed around the world, in Japan try the usual shops, USA Rescued from Life, Feral Ward, Katorga Works and S.P.H.C., Scandinavia try Kjell's distro and Germany Crucificados. Within the next few days I'll be doing direct mailorder on this as well as a whole bunch of Wankys stuff (just waiting on delivery of "who killed jarco" shirts) including the infamous bottle openers and key rings. In the meantime i'll try and upload this recording to give you a listen.

Please For Fuck Me Flexi

The Wankys- ‘Please For Fuck Me’ Flexi with Ploppy Pants Fanzine issue 12 is out now on Problem Records, please order directly from them http://x4298x.blogspot.com/ or Donkey Dan if you live in the U.S.A. I’m assuming the usual shops in Japan and La Vida Es Um Mus (UK) will also be selling copies. We are really pleased with the audio reproduction from these discs (we made a special recording and took care mastering the songs) however, as these flexis are new technology (yes I know they are as old as the hills, but Pirates Press have sort of re-invented them) they are not without problems (no pun intended) and the chances are if you have a cheap USB turntable your copy might skip or jump.  To compensate for this we are offering this release as a download, click on this link to get the songs for free http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8ZOHXRZE enjoy.

Noise Punk 002

The Wankys- live Puntala LP test pressing arrived and it sounds great, I forgot what a fucking racket this recording was so I got quite a shock upon hearing it blasting through my stereo, very sick sounding stuff. I plan to upload this release for a free digital download so you can check it out before buying, I'd hazard a guess that the sound of this recording won't be very appealing to even the most hardened Wankys fan. It should be out in the next 2-4 weeks,  check your favourite distro in about a month or so for a copy.

TIA Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue benefit gig Sat 9/4/11

Lots of stuff happening with Noise Punk Records, one thing that I am really excited about it the possible re-release (on vinyl) of an obscure demo cassette by an obscure Japanese band, more on that later.

This Staurday 9th April The Wankys will be playing in Nottingham with our Leicester friends Diet Pills (slow and HEAVY, think Electric Wizard with too much Lysergic Acid Diethylamide), Cry Havoc (heavy d-beat crust with wild guitar solos) and a bunch of other bands that I have never seen/heard. Nothing special about this you may ask well you are wrong; this is a benefit gig for the TIA Greyhound and Lurcher rescue. Our friend Sallie has had some dogs from there and this is her way of helping to support TIA. http://www.tiagreyhounds.org.uk/index.html
Please come and support this worthy cause and have some punk rock fun at the same time.

VIOLENT SHITT, the future of rock n roll.

Bunch of jokers from down south who have been wanking over too many Scum Dribblerzzz live tapes, feed me like a fucking dog, this is without question the future of rock and roll. There is a 72 song tape that has titles such as Shit City, london shit city (too right) , London Boys shit, London Girls shit and  Too Many Good Musicians in the Wankys, they are obviously not talking about me. The cassette comes with a beautiful poster that now adorns the wall of Studio Distortion Party.

I don't know how to upload this video to this page, but click on the link below to see some live footage.

3rd time lucky?

Well the 3rd test pressing for the flexi arrived...in absolutely terrible condition (once again), my needle looks like it's on a roller coaster, however the good news is that they play perfectly on my turntable and sound excellent so it's approved. Lets hope the finished product arrives in better condition.

Life is short

As you are probably aware Phil Vane died recently. Phil was the on/off singer in Extreme Noise Terror (ENT) and Optimum Wound Profile. I used to hang around with Phil in 88-89 and although we never became friends, I have some very fond memories of spending fun nights at his bedsit, ate some great food and listened to some great sounds. I respected Phil for the money he raised for animal rights organisations, mostly local (to Phil) hunt sabs. If I remember correctly the money he raised from putting on gigs at the Caribbean Centre bought them a van.  He also saw animal rights as something more than a five-minute fashion and remained a vegetarian until his early death; this is something I admire.

ENT made an absolutely outstanding recording that was released as a split album with Chaos UK on the Manic Ears label. This recording is a landmark in the history of brutal music; to be honest I don’t think any band has since managed to produce such a raw, brutal and urgent sound. Imagine if you can a sped up early Discharge with the singers of Gism and Rattus, Dean Jones providing the Gism style vocals and Phil doing the crazed Rattus impressions, they even used to switch those styles, though the Dean Gism and Phil Rattus always worked best. A classic Hardcore Punk record! I first heard this recording as a demo and with no info assumed they were Japanese. I was overjoyed to learn the band would be playing at a pub that I used to frequent called the Mermaid in Birmingham, it wasn’t until the band started playing that I discovered they were actually a British band. That night they blew the roof off the place.

Imagine how delighted I was when I had the opportunity to play in the band. The time I spent in ENT is something I rarely talk about (I’m not one for looking backwards) and it’s an odd thing for me to now reflect upon. I played in the band for about a year or so in 88 and 89, doing two European tours and a few recordings, the only recording I ever listen to is the 2nd John Peel session (raw as hell), which was put out as a bootleg 7” in Belgium. The first two versions (there were three in total) of Holocaust in your Head are pretty terrible, I guess not rehearsing and abuse of various illicit substances contributed to those atrocities. Though I assume the band and Phil were happy with the Hurt Records pressing as it was recently re-issued on vinyl by a German label having previously been re-issued on Compact Disc. I have not heard but am actually curious to hear these re-presses to see if they rectified the sound errors that appeared on the original Hurt Records pressing. The tours I did with the band were tough but fun, on the downside we had very little food, no money and a hyperactive drummer with a big mouth, the plus side was the gigs were usually amazing, lots of booze and the opportunity to travel to places that I have since visited on numerous occasions.

Sadly later ENT material never captured the rawness of their first recording, though many consider some of their later albums (the afore mentioned Hurt pressing of Holocaust and Phonophobia) to be classics. The band is still around now playing some very unimaginative and boring Grindcore, the only saving grace being the Jones/Vane vocal attack. They have in the past few years toured in the USA and Japan and played festivals around Europe, I’m confident that Phil would have loved those experiences.

I will remember Phil by spinning the Chaos UK split LP and thinking of him as being an integral part in one of the greatest Hardcore Punk albums ever made.

My deepest sympathies go out to his friends and family.

The death of somebody I know is a constant reminder that life is precious, if I can pass any words of wisdom onto people out there then it’s live life to the full and try to spent it with people you love and care about.

As a tribute to Phil I am sharing some pictures of him from my private punk rock archive, enjoy.
On the Ferry To Belgium, 1st Euro tour Feb 88, Smithy, Pete Alberto, Phil, Lee, Pat.
Hurley and Phil, 88.
Lets call this picture Extreme Fear of Napalm Terror. Phil is on the right.

Rejected for a 2nd time

This saga continues, for the 2nd time the test pressing for the Wankys flexi disc has been rejected, 3rd time lucky, lets hope so. Strange thing is I have probably made 20-30 records and have never rejected any test pressings until now.
My email is not working, so don't try and contact me that way until the problem gets resolved.

Nosie Punk 002 The Wankys Live Puntala LP

Seems the nice people at Lady Lasor Records spent all their cash on Mentholated Spirits and wont be releasing the Wankys live Lp after all.  No sweat I will do it myself, watch this space.

Rejected

The test pressing of The Wankys flexi disc arrived in such poor condition they were not even fit for the rubbish box. Lets hope 2nd time lucky.

The perks of being a record label executive.

Lucky me got sent some records from Paul of Cider, first up is the new Cider ep on SPHC, 5 songs of snotty raw punk, no I don’t mean that terrible d-beat crust shit, which to me mostly does not sound very raw or very punk. I mean raw punk, as is dirty old H/C punk, more Raped Ass than Scandinavian Jawbreaker, you get that, right? A lazy comparison might be the rather excellent Spanish band Firmeza 10 who recently toured the UK. Picture if you can Gabba jamming with United Blood/Victim in Pain era Agnostic Front. The guitar tone is thick and full sounding with more grit in it than my back after I’ve been on a water slide. No bass on this recording, which they will have on the upcoming tour whilst drummer Bobby is no slouch, he’s solid and spot on. The back cover is homage to the Complete Disorder ep whilst the front has their uncompromising statement “declare your independence from big business”. England had better be ready for what is about to be unleashed upon them.

Next we have the H100’s live LP (Noncommercial Records), this band I’m familiar with due to somebody doing me some cassettes of some 7inches years ago (kids, cassettes are a bit like mp3’s, from an era when mostly the only way you got to hear a new band was when somebody from some far flung place spent 1 ½ hours making you a cassette of their favourite bands). I remember I liked those songs but the most significant thing was they did a ripping Systematic Death cover! Later that band evolved into 9 Shocks Terror who I was a big fan of, love their stuff. Back to this album, wow, this is so much better than I remember those dodgy tapes, great sound, unrelenting solid H/C, great musicianship, the band are on fire, Die Kreuzen meets Japcore. I need to also mention the skinhead bating that is going on at the gig, funny as fuck, actually they pretty much take no prisoners and all the audience seems to be getting some stick. Outstanding! Anyone want to sell me some H100’s records?

The Injections- who killed santa

This is a band I was in briefly but I was kicked out, but I will join again once the Japanese tour is organised....

Cider drinking England by the pound tour Feb 2011

I need to mention the Cider England tour that I have disorganised which starts in 3 weeks time (20th Feb 2011). This cult Cleveland band are over here for just 4 gigs, Leicester, Leeds, Sheffield and London so if you get the chance, check them out. This history of the band goes back two decades and they don’t seem to be very active, so I guess this is probably the one and only opportunity most of us will have to see the band. I’m anticipating lots of drunken chaos, confusion and antisocial punk rock.
I got this link from Wedge so I’d hazard a good guess that this is a band sanctioned download of their “they are the enemy” album, which seems to be a collection of sold out ep’s and demos with a live song.

Noise Punk 001 Chaos Destroy- 2nd ep

Noise Punk 001 is the 2nd vinyl 7inch release by Maryland noise punk band Chaos Destroy. This is their 3rd vinyl release and contains 6 songs that were recorded on a 4-track cassette portastudio with amazing raw (but good raw) sound quality.

I met Mike the singer in the Summer of 2009 when we worked together on a project, which has so far remained unreleased. Actually now I think about it I had previously worked with the band on several different occasions, including them on all 3 volumes of Downtown Noise Punker , mastering a live recording for them (Tony I still never got a copy), and also recording guitars for an alternative take of their debut ep. I also had the absolute pleasure of touring with these guys in June 2010 when The Wankys toured the East Coast of the US, so it seemed only natural that we would have future collaborations. in my opinion they are one of the best bands in the world and I am deeply proud of this release, enjoy.

If you get the opportunity please check out their Collection Not Collection LP, which is a milestone in the history of noise and punk rock, amazingly copies are still available from distributors in the US, UK and Japan.

Future plans for Noise Punk Records include the debut 7" ep of Formby Channel and the 3rd Chaos Channel 7" ep.
